In his series of ‘Inner Game’ books, Timothy Gallwey explains performance in a simple equation:
P = p – i
i.e Performance = potential – interferences
What Gallwey is saying here is that each of us has the potential to improve our performance, but what stops us are individual interferences.
Gallwey is primarily referring to the interferences that occur inside our head i.e. our negative attitudes, beliefs and habits, some of which we may not even be aware of, that prevent us from performing as well as we could.
:There are however other external interferences which also affect an athlete’s performance and these can come from a variety of areas of our lives, aside from our sport. Key areas include, our relationships, finances, career, personal and professional development, fun and recreation; health, and the physical environment we’re living in. Problems or worries in any of these areas are a distraction and can have a very detrimental effect on an athlete’s performance.
Life coaching helps in addressing both these internal and external interferences. Working with you, we can help you identify and address unhelpful thinking habits and limiting beliefs you might have, facilitating and guiding you to replace them with more positive and empowering thinking habits and beliefs. In parallel with this, by using the Wheel of Life tool as a starting point, we work with you to identify aspects of your life which may be holding you back, causing these negative interferences where change is needed. Together we identify where you would like to be in these areas, what might be blocking you, by setting clear goals and strategies to overcome these obstacles, get you to where you want to be. Minimising these interferences will not only have a positive impact on your life in general, but it will clear the way for you to focus fully on your sport related goals.
